For over 20 minutes, we lay still in the heather, waiting for the sun to break through the cloud cover that – of course – appeared just as the male ptarmigan had settled perfectly into the landscape. The sun finally came – and the bird decided to move – just in time for us to capture this beautiful photo of it. The sunlight casts its magical glow on both the moss and the stunning bird. Notice the slightly brown feathers on the ptarmigan’s chest. That’s because it had been sandbathing shortly before – a common activity for ptarmigans during the summer months.
